Would your family doctor attempt to remove a tumor from your brain?  Would you attempt to remove the tumor yourself using your own tools and guidance from a do-it-yourself website found on the internet?  Of course not!  Your family doctor would refer you to an expert, a specialist in this field who is highly skilled and has had specialized training and high tech equipment to handle such a case.

In the world of computers there are also general practitioners, but in this field they are known as computer technicians or service providers.  Like your family doctor, who may own his/her own practice, a number of computer technicians own their own business and provide a number of services with respect to the repair and maintenance of systems.  Other technicians work for either a company, a store or within an IT Department of a large organization.

In addition to computer technicians, like the medical field, there are also specialists.  These specialists are highly trained and knowledgeable technicians who are capable of handling very difficult hard drive issues and who can recover data safely.  They work within a lab environment which contains a number of high tech tools and devices which were solely designed for the purpose of data recovery procedures.

Most technicians are skilled and represent their clients well.  Nonetheless, they are not familiar with safe data recovery procedures and do not have the necessary specialized tools.  Therefore, an attempt on their part to recover data often causes further damage which lowers the chances of a successful recovery.  This happens because many technicians are unaware of the many causes of data loss and how to handle such an event safely.  When technicians work on your computer, they often assume that you have no valuable data stored on it, or that you have your data backed up on another device.  They then take risks such as putting your hard drive in the freezer or tapping it with a hammer.  If they were informed that the data was valuable to their client, they may not have attempted such risks.  Therefore, it is up to you to ensure that your technician knows the value of your data and that you expect them to take the proper safety precautions necessary in order to protect that data.

Many technicians are well-intentioned and are very good at what they do.  However, the discipline of data recovery and proper preventative maintenance is very specialized and requires many expensive tools and techniques that are only developed with experience and proper knowledge in this area.  Therefore, like your family doctor, it is the responsibility of your technician to ensure that a data recovery specialist is consulted if you lose your important data, or your technician should at least provide you with the option rather than attempting data recovery procedures himself.  To some degree, that would be like a general practitioner performing brain surgery as appose to referring you to a brain surgeon.

Computer owners also often attempt their own data recoveries with do-it-yourself tools they bought off the internet or from a computer service company and are devastated when informed that they rendered their own data unrecoverable, or much more expensive to recover.  Therefore, if you lose your data and the value to you is worth more than $300, contact a professional data recovery lab, explain the situation and seek their advice.  If you decide to send your drive to them, they will typically provide a free evaluation and the quoted price will often be much lower as long as do-it-yourself attempts were not performed on the device prior to sending it to the lab.  If you find their quoted price too high, ask another lab for a second opinion, otherwise go ahead and allow a computer technician to make the attempt.  Their price will be considerably lower, they may have some luck and at that point you have nothing more to lose.
